Our tutors' top tips for exam revision

Exam season can be a stressful time but there are ways that you can turn that energy into positive motivation.

Here are Key Learning’s top tips for revision:

  1. Give yourself time - Starting your revision early will give you time to learn in bite sized chunks. More importantly, it will mean that you are probably more prepared, feel more in control and therefore, more relaxed.

  2. Practice makes perfect - Virtually all knowledge is improved with practice, so don’t be afraid to go over the same concepts either with flash cards, post it notes, diagrams or lists, to give yourself the best chance of retaining information and concepts.

  3. Be strict, be kind - Create a challenging but achievable revision timetable that you are likely to stick to. So, be strict and put away the phone and avoid social media to ensure that you are focused for each session. Be kind to yourself by making revision sessions realistic and achievable with a reward break to look forward to at the end.

  4. Learning environment - Whether you like noise, silence, music, coffee shops, libraries or having a film on in the background, find out what works for you. Stay hydrated and eat regularly so that you can stay awake and focused. Work out what time of day is most effective, too.

  5. You do what? Try to work out what kind of learner you are by trying different methods. So, some people use spider diagrams, others learn by reading and copying the information out by hand. In our Bingley learning centre, we found that maintaining a calm, relaxed environment helps to focus the attention of students. Having a break and change of activity after 40 minutes helps to keep students interested and attentive.

  6. Test yourself Read the text book and make flash cards of each concept. Pick out a flash card and see if you can describe the concept that the flash card belongs to. This reinforces the knowledge and allows you to build.
